E-Mobility & Autonomous Driving dominate CES 2020

Las Vegas – This year at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) electronic mobility (E-mobility) and autonomous driving dominated the automotive halls in the massive Las Vegas convention center. Automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), aftermarket, and artificial intelligence companies clearly focused display space on these two sectors. Every other booth seemed to be an electric or new energy vehicle (NEV) and/or the artificial intelligence or battery system to compliment it.

The most prominent Chinese car company, Byton, displayed it’s newest SUV while it’s primary competitor, NIO, was conspicuously absent. Fisker was on display with a new SUV as well. Overall, the majority of autonomous driving and sensor related companies came from China. Many of the solutions offered were targeting the same areas including companies offering LIDAR solutions. Again, the majority coming from China.

Shared mobility was the most intersecting of the offerings as companies prepare for the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart cities to dominate mobility infrastructure. Bell, Hyundai, and many others offered their concept on what air-mobility and driver-less taxi’s looked like. Overall it was quite impressive.

FAO Global Takeaways

If U.S. and Chinese automakers are not already involved in the autonomous or E-mobility sectors they are behind. Every OEM should be prepared to have an electric or hybrid variant in their portfolio. Not only does electrification aid in complying with stricter regulations across geographies, but it is an ever increasing consumer demand. Additionally, OEMs should prepare to integrate their vehicles with IoT aids and eventually an autonomous driving tool. This could be through merger and acquisition (M&A), joint venture (JV), or in-house research & design (R&D).
